Hugh Makin is the designer/maker of modern timber furniture at Makin Workshop, located in Dja Dja Wurrung country near Daylesford in country Victoria.

Hugh works with architects and designers as well as with domestic clients on bespoke timber pieces. Hugh has worked with award winning restaurants such as Rare Hare, Matilda and Vue Du Monde. He is known for working with natural edge, ethically sourced species as well as recycled wood, combining modern considerations with traditional joinery.

Hugh began making custom joinery in 2009 in Canada, there he worked for a contemporary East Vancouver furniture designer. He came home to Castlemaine in Rural Victoria in 2011 and started Makin Workshop. Hugh has a Bachelor of Fine Arts, Drawing from RMIT and a Cert IV in Design from Swindburne. In 2016 he won a Craftsmanship Award at Fringe Furniture as well as exhibiting at Denfair 2016/2017.
